Can you share about your first visit to Salon Secrets Spa?

My first visit was in 1997. I’d been “ salon hopping” after moving to the area in 1993. I was looking for a place to get great color and good customer service.

I remember calling the front desk and asking for a stylist recommendation and they put me with Allison. What struck me first was the kindness of the front desk staff. Then my experience with Allison was both professional and friendly.

Her interview of my vision and thoughts for both my color and cut was refreshing and detailed. She wanted to know how I wore my hair, what products I used, how long I wanted to spend styling it and so forth. Her service was spectacular, the cut was incredible and my color was exactly what I envisioned.

I felt both seen and heard by her. I felt relaxed and pampered. I will never forget her kindness and skill and have been with her ever since.

Over the years, how has your relationship to beauty and wellness evolved?

Such a rich question! I feel my relationship to beauty and wellness has changed to include a deep connection to my authentic self. When I was younger I loved the results of a good treatment or color change. Now I appreciate the kindness and attention to care that goes into the treatment.

Beauty isn’t the package… it's how we feel within ourselves. That has been a very rewarding journey for me. Appreciating life and its precious moments means so much to me.

As women, we aren’t taught that. We are told that how we look is all that matters. I know now, at almost 60, that isn’t true. What’s important is connecting with life, connecting deeply to our loved ones, being present for the simple moments.

That is what brings beauty into our lives. That is what brings wellness. I also do believe that taking care of myself is an act of self love. I eat right, (most of the time!) do yoga and walk every day… These are all important acts of wellness and beauty.

Tell us about your business and why you love it so much.

I began my own business in 1998 doing bodywork and aromatherapy. Through the years I have added energy work and sound treatments. I take a very individual approach to each session. There is plenty of time for the client to speak of what feels out of balance in that moment, what needs support and what needs care. Each session is a little bit different depending upon the clients needs.

Over the decades I have evolved and therefore my treatments have evolved. I continue to change and grow, which makes me a better practitioner. My number one goal is to provide a safe space for my clients to feel peaceful and relaxed. I have also started working with a local hospice program to provide aromatherapy for their patients. This is new for me! I am learning so much and feel very honored to expand my practice working with those facing the end of life.

I feel very fortunate to love what I do, to feel connected to meaningful work and to make a difference in someone’s life. I never take that for granted!

Can you share a wellness or beauty secret you swear by?

Here’s my wellness/ beauty secret…. take your self care seriously!

It is not a luxury… It is a necessity. And do what you love regarding self care. I think that to do something because you are “supposed to” takes all the fun out of it. Find out what you love, take the time to listen to yourself and what you need.

Is it a walk? Is it a morning baking cookies? (one of my favorites) Is it a new lipstick or face cream? Use what you love and do what you love.

Life is challenging enough… to have moments in your day where you feel pampered or energized goes a long way to help lower the stress levels.

A good night's sleep is huge for me. I have struggled with insomnia for many years. To do what I can to get restful sleep is a major priority for me. When I can get 7 or 8 hours of sleep, it’s pure magic.

Also, having a sense of humor is very important. The most beautiful people I know are those that can laugh at themselves and enjoy life as it comes. The light in someone’s eyes as they laugh is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.

What is your favorite hobby?

I have to say, I do love my hobbies! First and foremost is baking. I am a huge baker and it comes naturally. My grandfather was a baker in downtown Philadelphia. Growing up my mother taught me the art of baking and I have been doing it ever since.

Pastries, brownies and cookies are my specialty. Chocolate, caramel, berries, fruits and jams are incorporated into lovely confections of heaven.

When I am in the kitchen baking with good music playing, I’m totally absorbed in the creative process. I can’t tell you how much I love it!

I am also a potter, working with clay. I enjoy taking clay, putting it on the wheel and forming it into something beautiful. The transformation process is endlessly fascinating to me. It doesn’t matter what form, be it clay or baking, or a conversation… I am amazed by the transformation.

I have also begun painting. My mother was an artist and I grew up with her artwork on the walls. I have enjoyed learning this new skill. I use oils, acrylics, inks, spray paints and dry pigments. My art is abstract and bold. I find I lose myself in the process much like baking or pottery, and feel very inspired by the journey.

Favorite place I have traveled:

There’s a little place in Tuscany called San Gimignano. It was a side venture when my husband and I traveled to Italy. The most beautiful Tuscan town. Great views, great espresso, great food. I would go back again anytime! We are headed to Greece this September, so my answer may change.

What is one beauty product you could not live without?

Hands down, the Aveda Botanical Repair Bond-Building Styling Cream. This product is unbelievable!

My hair is fine, so having anything heavy will weigh it down. This product is amazing. It leaves my hair shiny but also..a bit of hold.

This whole line (Botanical repair) is a game changer for anyone with dry or treated hair. I have told so many friends and family about this product…it's one of the best things to come out of Aveda in years. I will always have this in my cabinet.

Last Christmas my niece from New Zealand came for a visit and we had a spa day at the house. I used this product on her hair before blowing it out… she was amazed! She ordered it when she got home and loves it. My sister in law after using it said, “Where has this product been all my life?!” I always have a spare bottle in my cabinet just so I don’t run out!

How do you stay motivated to keep prioritizing your health and beauty even on challenging days?

I look at it this way, health is everything. And there is no one who is going to do it for me. My job requires that I be very present and attentive for hours on end. My clients need me to be rested, well fed and hydrated so that I can provide excellent care.

My personal life requires me to be present and available when needed. So it is up to me to be as healthy as possible. That means, time alone to recharge, time with friends to feel connected and listening to my body and its needs. I am by no means perfect with this, but I’m 80% on the mark. I know what makes me feel better.

Self knowledge is key. By taking responsibility to care for myself, I am a better business owner, wife, friend and baker. Going to the salon is also one of the ways I restore myself. Spending time with Allison and being in that state of transformation is very restorative to me. Being there, it’s so beautiful, everyone is so kind, Allison is a master at haircuts and color, I leave feeling refreshed and pampered. It's not just superficial change… it's the caring and kindness that causes the real transformation.

Why do I prioritize my health and beauty routine? Because it makes me feel better on all levels. And If I feel better… I will have a positive impact on my corner of the world.
